Pallas University has no less than five chairs in philosophy. They are held by Professors Descartes, Aristotle, Bacon, Carneades, Descartes and Erasmus and are chairs of logic, metaphysics, noumenology, ontology and political theory. Each professor professes a different one of those subjects.
The chairs are allocated on the old boy net years in advance. So chaos was caused when a previous Professor Plato lived to be 104. The roster was allowed to stand, however, and none of the present holders has the chair he specialises in. Aristotle was appointed before the noumenologist but after Bacon. The metaphysician was appointed after Erasmus but before the ontol-ogist. No two professors have in effect directly exchanged chairs.
Descartes should hold the chair whose occupant should hold Aristotle’s chair. The metaphysician should hold the chair whose occupant should hold the chair held by the logician. Bacon should hold the chair whose occupant should hold the chair held by the metaphysician. Carneades should hold the chair whose occupant should hold the chair held by the ontologist.
Who holds the chair of what?
