Recently a jury in Los Angeles has found Google and Meta liable for harming children due to defective products that are designed to be addictive. Content available on these products can lead to mental health issues. These companies do not create the content, but they create addictive platforms that promote the harmful material to minors.

Tech companies have been largely immune to lawsuits based on the content of their platforms due to Section 230. Now that veil is pierced. They can now be sued because of the harm their platforms have caused.

I have seen it said that the era of Big Tech's invincibility has ended, and this lawsuit's outcome will make Big Tech like Big Tobacco. The harm that Google's and Meta's products cause is not dissimilar to the harm caused by smoking cigarettes. These harms can be deadly, and children are targeted for profit.

My one thought is that I would not want to trade places with the billionaires involved in these lawsuits. Child harm is not a stain that can be easily washed away. It will be interesting to see how the executives running Google, Meta and similar companies can legally maneuver to protect their financial interests.
