The Sisters of Mercy's brand of pop-goth was never quite my scene, but I remember being ok with a few tracks off 1987's
Floodland and giving them the occasional spin on my college radio show. Their post-
Joy Division baritone darkness was tempered with more of a
Shriekback/
Love & Rockets new wave dance flavor, lightening it up just a shade. Most effective was "Lucretia My Reflection," a tremendous, beefy bassline and resounding snare elevating the song into a moody yet radio-friendly nightclub anthem. Not a record I take for a spin much these days, but still one of those songs that can spice up a mixtape.
